Sustainable Living Educational Series – April – December
Teaching folks how to live more sustainable lives on Hawaii Island. Update: Organizers of the Kona Earth Festival have adopted some of our efforts. We’ll be joining forces to present additional value during the Kona Earth Festival in April.
- Kona (sponsored by Hawaii County R&D)
- Organic Gardening, Rainwater Harvesting, Alternative Energy
- To be held at: local sustainable community / NELHA’s Gateway Center
- Completion of the Sustainable Living Educational Series classes at the Waimea Community Education (WCE) center in Kamuela. September & October 2009.
- Plan and deliver additional Sustainable Framework/Sustainable Living classes for the Waimea Community Education Center for Spring 2010 classes (Jan thru June). Submit by mid-Nov. 2009; coordinate dates & classes with WCE in order to publish classes by mid-December 2009.
- Market and present the SLES series of classes for the North Hawaii Education & Research Center (NHERC) in Honoka’a. October & November 2009
Hawaii Island Sustainability Update - March
Leaders presenting updates on all sustainable projects island-wide in a public forum.
- Evening of March 20th (Earth Day) at the Palace in Hilo – Save the Date
- Call for participation (Leaders in Sustainability – presenters)
- 10-minute presentations, panel for public QnA, more…
Strengthening Hawaii’s Digital Economies - June
Learning to become self-sufficient using the web as a platform.
- Sustainable Business Workshops – June – September
- 12 classes for small business owners and webmasters (Thursday evenings)
- Teaching folks how to use the web to become economically self-sustainable
- Sustainable Web Community (online business hui)
- Green Web Server goes online at NELHA
- Monthly WordPress and Web 2.0 Classes (Third Tuesday 6pm)
- Big Island Adobe User Group - site
Pathways our of Poverty Grant Application – Due September 29th
- Submit the GCT portion of the Pathways out of Poverty grant application to be submitted by HIWEDO.
Continue the GCT “Green Sustainability Framework Lunch Presentations” at specific identified companies as we did at Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Headquarters and scheduled at the Keck Headquarters (Thurs., Dec. 17th, Noon).

Green Collar Internships – Ongoing
Providing pathways anyone can follow to promote sustainability on Hawaii Island.
- Sustainable Living – interns accepted into the program learn about sustainable energy, agriculture, permaculture, off the grid living, rainwater harvesting, native plants and forest.
- Sustainable Web Platforms – selected interns learn about sustainable web designs, platforms and web 2.0 social marketing.
