Permaculture - Design for Emerge-and-See Preparedness
July 3rd - 6:00pm - 7:30pm

Instructor - Zach Mermel - Bio This workshop will equip participants with the basic tools to thrive in changing times. Topics will include: designing the homescape to effectively cope with floods, fires, hurricanes, lava flows, and tsunamis; integrating appropriate technology strategies for increased self-reliance; and creating a functional emergency preparedness kit. A great course for the house dweller and apartment dweller alike.

Solar / Off-grid Power Generation Overview
July 10th - 6pm-7pm

Ross Armetta (Bio) from Alfalfas.net will provide an overview of creating a solar power system and using solar energy to save money, including how to specify a basic system. The information is designed primarily for off-grid applications but grid-tie “reverse power meter” can also be summarized if the class desires. Also, Wind, Generators, and other sources can be discussed in a summary fashion if the class desires.

Learn which components you need to collect, store and use the energy you’ve harnessed.

You will learn design by demand and budget approaches and how to start out with a basic system and upgrade as budget permits.

You will learn about the various module and controller types and manufacturers and reliability and service provided by them.

You will also become aware of system limitations and safety issues and ways to keep costs down and lengthen the life of your system.

This is a real world approach to understanding the realities of generating solar energy. This class is specifically designed to help you understand the benefits and pitfalls of solar energy applications in usage and in cost.

This class focuses on the design and generation side of off-grid power primarily solar. The Alternative Power Applied Overview Class is primarily on how to apply the power to various applications. While this class is useful by itself it is designed to enhance and compliment the Alternative Power Overview.

Rainwater
Harvesting
July 17th - 6pm-7pm

Instructor Trisha Macomber (Bio) MPH (HawaiiRain.org) University of Hawaii CTAHR will introduce you to the age old art of harvesting rain. You will learn the basics of rainwater collection from raindrop to faucet. This class will cover the most important do’s and don’ts so that you can design and plan a system to meet your specific needs. It will also discuss potabilty issues and treatment techniques in easy to understand terms. Whether you are thinking of installing a rain barrel for your garden or building a sustainable home, this class will give you the information you need to catch and collect your own water.

Alternative
Power Applied Overview

July 24th - 6pm-7pm

Ross Armetta (Bio) from Alfalfa’s.net will provide an overview of using off-grid DC / AC power and their relative merits and limitations. You will learn about power sources and and how to apply them for, lighting, water pumping, remote powered, and residential applications.

You will learn the basics of specifying systems to enable you to determine the design, cost, benefits, and payback of a particular system for a given application.

You’ll learn how to choose and use batteries properly, about DC powered appliances and lighting, and about AC inverters and systems and their drawbacks and applications. Gain awareness of off-the-grid power potential and using power safely. This class will help you choose and use wisely: It will be a money saver for those purchasing and using off-grid power. While the class is useful by itself it is designed to enhance and compliment the Solar Power Introduction class. So come on down for a night of knowledge, green conservation ( including money), and fun.

Sustainable Living 101
July 31st - 6:00pm

Instructor Brent Norris from Green Collar Technologies will show you dozens of ways to increase your quality of life through sustainable living. This one hour class isn’t limited to off-the-grid setups but covers a wide-range of topics designed to help you do more with less without compromising your budget or quality of life. You’ll learn dozens of things you do in your everyday life to live a more sustainable lifestyle.

All Instruction is provided in a no-nonsense format allowing everyone in the class to choose appropriate tools and technologies in their lives. All the concepts introduced will be explained in a useful manner. Real-world implementations, total cost of ownership and “gotchas” will all be explained in an effort to save you time and money. It’s nice to learn things on your own, but it’s also really nice to get a helping hand once in a while. This is that helping hand.

Important! Minimum of five registrations, one week prior to class date. All registered students will be notified five days before class date via email “and” telephone if a class needs to be cancelled. All registrants will receive an immediate, payment recieved notification via email.
