Sustainable Living Educational Series
This year for Earth Day give yourself and the planet the gift of knowledge. Learn how to live a more sustainable life on Hawaii Island. Four evenings of education in various sustainability practices are coming to Kona, Hawai`i. Classes on Sustainable Living will include Rainwater Harvesting, Sustainable Gardening, Sustainability-Applied and Alternative Power Basics. Currently seeking additional sponsors. Part of the 2009 Kona Earth Festival, these classes will offer education, networking and information about green jobs. As with all our events, this series will feature classes with a straight-forward approach to living a more sustainable lifestyle on Hawai`i Island.

Rainwater Harvesting
Brent Norris from Green Collar Technologies will guide you through basic systems design from rain-barrels for your garden to complete systems for your home and business. You’ll learn the basics of systems safety and techniques to help improve your water quality. You’ll learn things to avoid and things to include in your own system. Ancient and modern applications will be discussed to help folks understand what’s possible and why catching rain water is more important than ever.

Sustainable Gardening with Claudia Ziroli
This money-saving workshop will equip participants with the basic tools to thrive in changing times. Learning to grow some of your own food will help you eat more healthy foods and save money at the grocery. In this one-hour workshop, participants will gain a basic understanding of how to use nature’s principles to produce their own food . We will discuss soil-building strategies, growing techniques and tropical food crops.

Sustainability Applied
This class will help you obtain value from living lightly on the island. Many real-life examples of off-the-grid living techniques will be covered. Self-reliance techniques will be covered for anyone wanting to live a more sustainable life on Hawai`i Island. Specific techniques for living a “greener” lifestyle will be shared and discussed. Join us and learn how to apply various sustainability techniques in your everyday life.

Alternative Power Basics
Ross Armetta from Alfalfas.net will share valuable insights into various alternative power generation systems. Learn to spec a basic solar system including all the system parts and their relative costs. Net metering and grid-tie options will be presented. Pros and Cons of various alternative energy systems will be presented for discussion. This class could potentially save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars in total alternative energy system costs.
