Supporting the Sustainable Web Community

The Hawaii Island Sustainable Web Community is the island’s only online community focused on sustainability. Sustainable web designs built on a standards-based, sustainable platform. What does that mean?

  • Our code is optimized. We use XHTML and CSS so that less code is needed to display our pages. We use less code so our pages load fast and ultimately require less energy to display.
  • Database driven. We use a open-source database (MySQL) to store out data. This separate our content from our design so that we can reuse and recycle our code. Our web design can change without rebuilding the entire site from scratch.
  • Simple administration and editing. We are in charge of our site. We edit our own site and this enables us to quickly make changes as you make recommendations.
  • Community involvement. We welcome your feedback and provide multiple methods for contacting us and leaving feedback about your experience on our site. We appreciate your comments and use them to make improvements in a constantly evolving feedback loop. We also have a RSS feed for those that want to subscribe to our updates and get the latest information via feed reader.
  • Green Web Hosting and Data Center. The future is also bright as we bring our Green Web Server online in 2009. By the end of 2008 we’ll have all our sites hosted on servers that are 100% powered by renewable, clean energy sources. This isn’t carbon-offsetting like many so-called “green web hosts” proclaim. These are the real-deal, off-the-grid redundant systems that are completely self-sustainable.

Not Green Washing…
Sustainability is the buzzword of the moment to describe all of our efforts to live more sustainable lives. Many factors have brought similar terms like, “going green” and “eco-friendly” to the main stream lately. Many more companies are engaged in sinful green washing of their brands in an effort to seem more environmentally friendly. If they can convince you they are, they feel they can sell you more product. We’re members of the Hawaii Island Sustainable Web Community for the behind the scenes reasons.
