A recent report created by by Joel Makower and the editors of GreenBiz.com has tons of great resources compiled, charted and graphed. Lots of tables of organized information such as Top Stories, a Green Biz index and the Best of 2007. (link at bottom of page)

We especially liked the section at the end of the report titled, “Indicators We Wish We Had.” An honest look at missing key indicators, GreenBiz.com underlines the need for acquiring and organizing Green Collar Worker Resource everywhere, not just Hawai`i.

from the 2008 State of Green Business Report at GreenBiz.com…

Green Job Creation. How many jobs are being created through all of the kinds of activities measured in this report? No one knows. There are estimates for jobs in clean technologies, but that’s only a small part of the picture. How about people working inside non-clean-tech companies on energy efficiency, or as recycling coordinators, as environmental procurement specialists, or any of dozens of other positions that have a green component? We need a means of understanding the impact of green business activities on job growth.

additionally the report states…

Green Business Growth. Similarly, there’s no good metric for the number of green businesses, their revenue, growth, or other metrics. There’s good reason for this: There’s no definition for “green business.” Does it refer to a company specifically in the business of environmentally preferable products or services? How about a dry cleaner or print shop that employs environmental practices? How about a division of a multinational company that is working on clean energy, bio-based materials, less-toxic cleaners, or any of hundreds of other environmentally improved products? We need a means of measuring the size and scope of environmental practices on the economy, and tracking over time.

At Green Collar Technologies we are in the process of obtaining the data necessary to answer the following questions:

How many Green Collar Workers are currently on Hawai`i Island?

How many Green Collar jobs are currently available?

How many Businesses on Hawai`i Island claim to be “green”?

How many workers claim to be green collar workers on Hawai`i Island?

We’re looking for sponsors and funding organizations to help us collect, qualify and quantify the effort. If you’re interested in volunteering or helping in any way, please send us a note.

Our intentions for using the word, “Green” on this website.

So when we use “Green” all over the place, we’re simply trying to make it easier for folks like you to find our website and resources. We started teaching folks how to use the Internet as a tool and a platform to sustain themselves. We still teach courses that enable a digital self-sustainability. One of the things we teach is how to get your message our using major search engines. To do this effectively, it’s important to use the keywords and key phrases on your website that folks are typing into search engines to find you.

So if you use “white collar worker” on your website, you will be indexed by the search engines. When people type “white collar worker” into the search engine, the chances are greater that they will find your website, than if you used the words, “green collar worker.”

So when we use “Green” all over the place, we’re simply trying to make it easier for folks like you to find our website and resources. When we use the key-phrase, “Green Events” it’s because research tells us that people are searching for the terms and since we offer a way to find and post “Green Events” we want other to be able to find us. It’s really that simple. However, there is of course a wrinkle. In addition to providing free services, we also offer services that cost money. We also offer advertisers ad space on our site thus generating revenue.

So we feel it’s important to go to the next level of explaining more specifically what we mean when we use certain terms. We will attempt to define each of the key phrases we use on this site. Ugh, that’s a lot of work! But it’s also very important since we not only have a responsibility to you and Federal guidelines, we also have an educational commitment. A large part of what we do is educate folks on what Green Collar Workers are and what we do.

So starting today, we will begin linking, where appropriate, the terms we use with a page that contains the specific definition and are intentions in using that word or phrase.

Million Jobs of a Different Color?

Excerpt from the New York Times article:

No doubt that the number of green-collar jobs is growing, as homeowners, business and industry shift toward conservation and renewable energy. And the numbers are expected to increase greatly in the next few decades, because state governments have mandated that even more energy come from alternative sources.

As usual, the entire article wasn’t positive. One Washington lobbyist, points out,

Mr. Ebell suggested that green jobs might not prove to be so great. “There will undoubtedly be a lot of jobs created in industries that are considered green or fashionable,” he said. “Some will last a long time, and some will go like the dot-coms.”
