Mahalo plenty to everyone in North Hawaii for supporting the SLES in Waimea. Wow! What an absolute pleasure it has been working with Cathy Youtkas at Waimea Community Education. Great Big Mahalo to Paul Zabel for organizing, marketing and making the Waimea series a success.

Now we turn our attention to the next Sustainable Living Educational Series. This time it’s in gorgeous Honokaa at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, North Hawaii Educational Research Center. This is the perfect opportunity to visit historic Honokaa and check out NHERC while attending a class. Classes start at 6pm and end at 8pm. Bring your family. Bring your notebook and something to write with. These classes are super educational. You’ll learn enough in two hours to fill your brain with ideas for the next two years. In fact, many lessons learned in class provide attendees with money-saving tips that can easily pay for the tuition a dozen times over!

The Honokaa series is just $20 per person, per class. The tuition pays our instructors and helps to cover the cost of the facilities and some basic marketing. Our goal is to educate, raise awareness and provide the knowledge, skills and abilities to help folks live a more sustainable lives on Hawaii Island.

The last class at Waimea Community Education is tonight -what a great series! Great big paniolo mahalos to Waimea Community Education for everything. The students in Waimea are super akamai!

We kick off the next Sustainable Living Educational Series in Honoka`a at the North Hawai`i Educational Research Center.

Open Government on Hawai`i Island

If you’re interested in Open Government on Hawai`i Island and the sale of public lands on the Hamakua Coast, you may want to consider attending this event sent in by Koh Ming Wei of Kua o Mala and the “Hawai`i Sustainable Education Initiative.”

Malama Honua Festival, Rally for Transparency Bill 132

Saturday, October 17th.

This event will take place at the grounds of the Honoka‘a County Gymnasium from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The Malama Honua Festival is a FREE event that will feature a wide spectrum of Hamakua homegrown musical artists, including Opu Vibes, Nonami, Uncle Boogie, Hualalai, and much more. Come and enjoy chili and rice for the entire family, FREE OF CHARGE. There will be speakers on Bill 132 and farmers that will be sharing their harvest.

This rally is to help people understand and support Bill 132. Passage of Bill 132 sets a much needed precedent for open government. Transparency Bill 132 seeks to insure public oversight in three main areas:

who is purchasing the land

what price is being paid, and

what is the intended use.

These safeguards are needed in order for the public to have an opportunity to review and scrutinize public land sales prior to finalizing the deal.

If you have an Open Government Event you’d like to get published, let us know, mmkay?
